The following sculptures form a series of four inspired by the time-honored concept of “The Elements,” namely Air, Water, Earth and Fire. The shape of each sculpture reflects that of a helmet from a different culture. The first, Air: The Heavens Protect Me, derives from medieval, Middle Eastern (Saracen) designs. Second is Water: Are You the Island or the Avenue? in the form of a Viking helmet. Earth: The Root of All Good is based on an ancient Greek (Macedonian) helmet. I recently completed Fire: Destruction or Rebirth?, which is shown last, below. This final helmet’s form is inspired by Japanese (Samurai) designs.
This series was created for display at the 7th International Fiber Biennial 2010 (February 5 – March 20, 2010, and Summer 2010) at the Snyderman Works Gallery in Philadelphia.
